Gulf of California/Mexico. Caption: The rugged peninsula and eastern coastal plain of northern Baja California are separated from the rest of Mexico by the Gulf of California. The Colorado River is building a delta into the gulf; most of the surface features seen here, including the sinuous salt-bottomed tidal channel on the delta, have remained unchanged since the first American space flight photos in 1961. Irrigated agriculture along the Gila River can be seen in the upper left hand corner of the photograph, and the Pinacates Volcanic Field in the upper right. An extensive field of sand dunes lines the eastern side of the gulf. A 70mm handheld Hasselblad camera with a 250mm lens was used to expose the frame at 15:22 GMT, Aug. 4, 1991.
